SUMMARY:Crossing Pathways: Erik Fender + Clarence Cruz Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:CROSSING PATHS OPENS AT THE POEH CULTURAL CENTER \n  \nWhen potters work with clay\, they traverse the paths so many generations of potters who have gone before have walked. Crossing Pathways\, which opens at the Poeh Cultural Center on March 15\, 2019 features the work of Tewa potters Erik Fender and Clarence Cruz\, as it represents an intersection in the literal and figurative sense\, of potters who continue a traditional art form expressed in a contemporary context. \n  \nErik Fender\, a potter and jeweler from San Ildefonso Pueblo\, is known for his polychrome as well as black on black pottery\, and he often adorns his fired pieces with pieces of turquoise\, beads and silver leaf. Clarence Cruz\, from the Pueblo of San Juan/Ohkay Owingeh\, is recognized for his traditional corrugated\, incised\, and carved polychrome pottery of San Juan\, as well as micaceous pottery. Both artists have been featured in many shows and galleries throughout the Southwest\, and both have taught arts classes at the Poeh Cultural Center. And through their eyes and hands\, we are invited to remember the beauty of today as we glimpse the past. \n  \nThe exhibition runs March 15 to June 29\, 2019\, and we invite you to join us for the opening reception on March 15\, 2019 from 5pm to 7pm at the Poeh Cultural Center\, 78 Cities of Gold Road\, Pojoaque\, New Mexico. \n  \nFor more information contact: \n  \nKeith Grosbeck 505.455.5045 \nkgrosbeck@pojoaque.org

SUMMARY:Jacob Viarrial Community Day
DESCRIPTION:The Poeh Cultural Center invites you to join us on June 28\, 2019 from 10 AM to 1 PM to celebrate Jake Viarrial Day (1946-2004). Viarrial\, who served 2 terms as the Governor of Pojoaque\, was a vocal advocate for Pueblo legal rights and sovereignty. His assertion of Pueblo sovereignty garnered national attention in 1995 when he challenged the state of New Mexico’s decision to force the Pueblo of Pojoaque to close its casino. Viarrial threatened to install tollbooths along U.S. 84-285 to make up for lost revenue if the state closed the casino. The state backed down. \nSenator Nancy Rodriguez (D) District 24\, who was a close personal friend of “Uncle Jake”\, will be on hand to help celebrate the event which will include stories\, music\, food\, and children’s activities. \nFor more information contact Macario Gutierrez at 505.455.5043 or magutierrez@pojoaque.org
